We meet monthly to share ideas and learn from each other
and from invited speakers.

President’s Message...

Welcome to the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), Long Island Chapter!  We realize you have a choice on how you spend your time outside of work and home. We also know that there are many great organizations on Long Island. Thank you for your interest in the ASTD.

Founded in 1944, the American Society for Training & Development is the world's premier professional association and leading resource on workplace learning and performance issues. ASTD's National membership includes more than 70,000 people working in the field of workplace performance in 100 countries worldwide. ASTD serves as the communications link for training professionals nationally, regionally and locally through publications, meetings and diverse activities.

The Long Island Chapter of ASTD meets approximately 10 times each year from September through June. Our regular evening chapter meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and include a light dinner. We also have two breakfast meetings a year that run from 8 am to 10 am. In January and June, our Chapter meetings are replaced by “special events” at a formal catering hall with a full dinner and an evening of socializing and learning. During all of our meetings, you have an opportunity to network and to learn about a pertinent learning and development topic in a fun, professional and friendly environment.

Recently, the new 2007-2008 ASTD Long Island Chapter Board of Directors met and decided on the theme, schedule and meeting locations for the first half of the season. We based these decisions on the results of the two member surveys we distributed this year. There is one major change from last year which is the meeting location. We are going to use three different locations for our regular meetings which will hopefully meet the needs of our geographically diverse membership. The three locations are as follows:
• New York Community Bank – Westbury
• Molloy College – Farmingdale
• Computer Associates - Islandia

Our theme for 2007-2008 is “Developing the Competencies to Excel”. Each meeting will focus on a topic listed in the ASTD Competency Model for training, learning and performance professionals. By developing the skills, knowledge and behaviors listed in the competency model, you can provide a superior level of service to the organizations you work with. We believe that every member of our Chapter and also many of our guests will benefit by focusing on developing or enhancing these competencies. A visual of the competencies is included below:

Our focus will be on the topics in the middle of the pyramid and we have exciting speakers scheduled from around the country! Save These Dates!
